The RS-449 is a standard that defines the functional and mechanical characteristics of an interface between data terminal equipment (DTE) and data communications equipment (DCE). The standards for electrical signals used by the RS-449 are specified by the RS-422 for balanced signals, and the RS-423 for unbalanced signals. Though never used on personal computers, this interface was applied to certain some network communication equipment. Data rates of up to 2 Mbits per second can be achieved by RS-449 interfaces.
The full title of the RS-449 standard is EIA-449 General Purpose 37-Position and 9-Position Interface for Data Terminal Equipment and Data Circuit-Terminating Equipment Employing Serial Binary Data Interchange. It was withdrawn in September, 1992. Figure 1 shows one physical implementation of the RS-449 interface (DB-37 connector) while Table 1 shows the signals corresponding to the interface pins.
